We are just three quick blocks away from the Prospect Park Subway Station! The main trains there are the Q and the B, which are both express trains to central locations in Manhattan. Just 15 minutes to Downtown Manhattan, Chinatown and the Lower East Side! Less than 20 minutes to Soho, West Village and Union Square and less than 30 minutes to 34th Street, Herald Square and 42nd Street, Times Square.
This lovely little neighborhood of Brooklyn was originally part of the estate of wealthy Brooklyn agricultural baron and landowner James Lefferts. During the Brooklyn housing boom of the 1890’s, he developed the area into a pastoral alternative to the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope. At the same time Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the brilliant naturalists and landscape designers of Manhattan's Central Park, were just completing their work on Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, gracing Brooklyn with their artful touch.
Today, Lefferts Manor is a quiet, tree-lined family neighborhood cherished for it’s beautifully preserved, museum-quality brownstone, limestone and many Italianate brickwork townhouses.
Come Experience the natural beauty of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, The Prospect Park Zoo, the newly renovated Brooklyn Museum and The Brooklyn Public Library's majestic Main branch which has also just been restored and renovated!
All of these wonderful Brooklyn attractions are within a short walking distance of Lefferts Manor! The beautifully restored Prospect Park Carousel and The Audobon Center and Boat House are adjacent to the Prospect Park Lake which offers paddle boating and a guided ecological electric Gondola tour and during the Winter there is Ice Skating at Wollman rink. The Prospect Park Tennis Center offers 11 tennis courts and a year-round tennis bubble. A beautiful 3.5 mile bridal path threads its way through the naturalistic forests of the the park with horse rentals and group or individual lessons available at Kensington Stables. Numerous nature trails and excellent jogging and biking paths also wrap around the loops and hills the park.
Even James Lefferts' original farmhouse, which was on the corner of Maple Street and Flatbush Avenue was picked up and moved into Prospect Park to be turned into the Lefferts Historic House; a museum offering visitors a glimpse into Brooklyn life in the 19th Century.
In the summer-time the Prospect Park Band Shell hosts dozens of free concerts and New York Philharmonic even comes and gives Brooklyn a free concert in the park every July. Other nearby cultural intsitutions include Brooklyn Academy of Music which sponsors concerts in the BAM Majestic Theater, on-going film screenings in the BAM Rose Cinemas and collaborative works with the neighboring Mark Morris Dance Center.
Park Slope, considered to be the heart of Brownstone Brooklyn, lies just on the other side of Prospect Park, teaming with great shopping and restaurants on 7th and 5th avenues. We both have lived in New York City for more than 20 years and we have lived in Park Slope and Lefferts Manor for the past 13 years and would love to recommend great things for you to do during your stay here! Lefferts Manor is also one of the most convenient Brooklyn neighborhoods bordering Prospect Park with regards to public transportation! We are only four quick train stops into Brooklyn. You can get to downtown Manhattan in 15 minutes or less, and to midtown in only 20! The Q and B trains are both frequent and reliable lines that also have the advantage of going up the center of Manhattan and connecting to almost all other lines in the city.
